Why take the exams?

The IVAO network tries to simulate to the best extent the real flight environment. In other words, IVAO final goal is to simulate the real aeronautical world as much as possible. Everyone is free to chose if and when take an exam. It's not mandatory! Reasons are so many and strictly personal. Everyone might want to take an exam  to check his own level of aeronautical knowledge or just as a personal challenge. For sure exams are useful to improve oneself  because require a good preparation  and impose to challenge ones knowledges and skills.

It's good to state here a clear and very important difference. Concerning pilots, no user will ever get any limitation whatsover when chosing a leg, or an aircraft to fly or anything else because of his rating.  No matter if you are a newbie or an IVAO and FS veteran, your rating won't make any difference throughout your  pilot simulation activity. On the other hand, concerning ATC,  according to the FRAs system (Facility Rating Assignment), the higher your rating is, greater is the number of ATC position you can open.

From the time you decide to requrst an exam, both pilot or ATC and for any rating,  both written and practical test undergo through different degrees of progress.  Let's  take a look at them deeply:

Written test: All the written test in IVAO consist of 20 multiple choice questions in English language. The test must be completed within 45 minutes starting when the questions are shown on your PC screen. (A green/red indicator in the top left corner of the screen will help you to check the time left) and the test will end the time you click the “submit” button. Keep in mind, that after pressing the "submit" button, if you have time left, you can use that time to check and correct your answers. At the end of the 45 minutes the test switches automatically in the “Registered” status. The system will check  your answers usually within 24 hours (it might take longer). Once evaluated, the test status will be “Success” or “Failed” according to the score. Furthermore you will get an automated e-mail to inform you about the test result.

Practical test: When applying for this kind of test you will be asked to write down some comments that will be forwarded to the examiner; use this field to request where  to take the exam (for ATC practical test) and which are your preferences about date and time for the test. You will be contacted by the examiner to set up the date. After taking the test, the examiner will inform you about the result and will write the comment on your personal profile page. To ensure maximum transparency and impartiality , there is a final step before final confirmation. At this point the test is in the “Validating” status. Another examiner will check that everything went according with R&R. Only at this point the test will be validated and you will get the “Success” or “Failed”. Again, you will get an automated e-mail to inform you about the result including your examiner's comment. .

Scores and waiting time.

Minimum passing score for both written and practical tests is 75/100.  If you get a score between 51/100 and 74/100, you will have to wait 15 days  before applying  for the test again. With a score between 1/100 and 50/100 you will have to wait 30 days. With the score 0/100 (zero), you will have to wait 90 days before applying again. After passing successfully a practical test you will have to wait 60 days before applying  for the written test  for the next level rating.

Rating update

Normally, once the test has been checked by the system or validated by the validator, the rating update in your profile is automatic and simultaneous. However , it may happen sometimes that the system doesn't work properly resulting in no change in the ratings after a test passed successfully. In this case you can send an e-mail to  IT‐TC or IT‐TAC (it‐tc@ivao.aero; it-tac@ivao.aero) to have the rating updated. After a quick check, we will make sure the rating will be updated as soon as possible.
